USCIS Announces 36-Month Extension for Green Card Renewals
Starting on September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will automatically extend the validity of Green Cards (Permanent Resident Cards) to 36 months for all lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90 to replace their Green Card. If you file Form I-90 correctly to renew an expiring or expired Green Card, you will benefit from this extension. Before this new policy was announced, USCIS was only extending receipt notices for 24-months when they received an I-90 application. USCIS further advises that they have changed the wording on the Form I-90 receipt notices to show that the validity of your Green Card is extended for 36 months from the expiration date on your current card, as long as you have submitted a new Form I-90 for renewal. Starting September 10, USCIS began issuing updated receipt notices for those with pending Form I-90 applications. You can use these receipt notices along with your expired Green Card as proof of your status and permission to work. This extension will help applicants who face longer processing times, as they will have proof of their lawful permanent resident status while waiting for their new Green Card. If you no longer have your Green Card and need proof of your status while waiting for a replacement, you can schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center. After you file Form I-90, you may receive an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp. USCIS also advises that if you change your mailing address while your I-90 application is being processed, you should update your address through your USCIS Online Account, if you have one. |
